This is one of Nigisti's favorite escapes from the capital — a full day out to Wonchi Crater Lake, departing Addis Ababa at 6:30 a.m. and back by 6:30 p.m., no overnight bag required.
You'll travel about 125 km southwest of Addis Ababa to the town of Ambo, then continue for roughly 30 km through the beautiful Ethiopian highlands until the crater rim opens up in front of you. Wonchi is surrounded by lush green mountains and spectacular scenery — an ideal destination for nature lovers, with colorful aquatic birds, colobus monkeys, and other wildlife along the way.
The excursion also includes a visit to the small island monastery and St. Kirkos (St. Korkos) Church, a historic religious site on the lake traditionally associated with Emperor Zara Yaqob and generally dated to the 15th century.
It's an easy add-on if you have a spare day in Addis Ababa — no trekking gear, no camping, just a private vehicle, a good guide, and one of the most beautiful crater lakes in Ethiopia.
