Lalibela, home to the "New Jerusalem" carved in stone, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most extraordinary religious and archaeological wonders in the world. Founded by the Zagwe dynasty, Lalibela served as Ethiopia's capital through the 12th and 13th centuries, in the era following Axum's decline. Its eleven monolithic rock-hewn churches were chiseled directly downward out of solid volcanic rock under King Lalibela himself, laid out in three groups whose locations were designed to mirror the holy sites of Jerusalem — sparing Ethiopian Christians a dangerous pilgrimage through hostile territory to the Holy Land, while pilgrims to Lalibela were believed to receive that same spiritual blessing. Still active places of worship today, these churches remain a living center of Ethiopian Orthodox Christianity, drawing travelers, pilgrims, and historians from around the globe. UNESCO inscribed the site as a World Heritage Site in 1978.

Carved entirely from a single block of stone and standing 15 metres tall, it forms a perfect cross when viewed from above, with doors and windows that echo the architectural style of ancient Axum. Its builders engineered gutters to channel rainwater off the roof and freestanding cruciform pillars inside — remarkable feats of engineering for structures that were carved rather than built. Visitors reach the church along a hand-carved path and through a short tunnel, arriving, quite literally, at the heart of Lalibela's sacred geography.
