Best Time to Visit Best Time to VisitRising from the Danakil Desert roughly 790 km from Addis Ababa, Erta Ale is one of the most active volcanoes on Earth — local legend calls it a gateway to hell, and standing at its rim after dark, watching molten rock glow beneath the crust, it's easy to understand why. Erta Ale is a shield volcano, about 50 km across and roughly 613 metres above sea level, with an elliptical summit caldera holding two pit craters, one to the north and one to the south. Since 1906, the southern crater has held a permanent lava lake — one of only a handful on the planet — its surface once spanning some 120,000 m² and churning at temperatures near 1,200°C, though its character shifts over time between open flowing lava, thick smoke, and heavy degassing.
The volcano has erupted repeatedly through recorded history — in 1873, 1903, 1904, 1960, and again from 1972 through 1974 — sending lava out across the caldera floor and the land beyond it. A particularly dramatic chapter unfolded in 2016 and early 2017, when the southern lava lake overflowed and a major fissure opened, draining both the lake and the magma reservoir beneath the northern crater by the end of January 2017.
What drives all this? Erta Ale sits where three tectonic plates — the Nubian, Arabian, and Somali plates — meet and are slowly pulling apart, widening the gap between them a little more each year. That widening rift lets heat and magma rise from deep within the Earth's mantle toward the surface across the northern Afar region, and it's this same tectonic process, playing out over millions of years, that has shaped nearly all of the volcanic and geological drama found across the Danakil today.
